What is URI – Uniform Resource Identifier ?

URI stands for Uniform Resource Identifier.

Uniform Resource Identifier Explanation and Uses

A Uniform Resource Identifier is a string of characters that helps identify a particular resource on the internet.

All URIs follow a predefined set of syntax rules, to maintain uniformity, but also maintain extensibility through a separately defined hierarchical naming scheme (e.g. “https://”)

URI Syntax

URI’s syntax consists of a hierarchical sequence of five main components.

URI = scheme:[//authority]path[?query][#fragment]

Example: https://mrvirk.com/javascript?country=UK#pageTop

https: is the scheme

//mrvirk.com is the authority

/javascript is the path

?country=UK is the query, which is used to provide additional information on the page.

#pageTop is the fragment/section on the page you are interested in for example top heading.
